Dickinson, CEO X4 Drones Inc. +/- This presentation will address the following: - The truth about drones and how they are vital to the insurance industry; - Why we should be onboard with insuring them; - The details and pitfalls to look out for; - Understanding Transport Canada regulations; and - Getting over our fear of the unknown.   AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES: NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL Discussion on autonomous vehicles and the impact they will have on the Logistics industry Speaker: Paul Godsmark, CTO Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE) +/- Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), often known as driverless cars, are undergoing rapid development and will be with us much sooner than most of us realize. This presentation will review the current state of technology development, the compelling business cases driving investment in this sector, the likely deployment scenarios and the subsequent impacts on our lives and work. The benefits and opportunities that AVs provide will be immense, but similarly there are major challenges and the downsides could be huge unless we seek to mitigate them as much as possible. AVs will be so much more than just ‘cars’ and have the potential to transform society as much as the internet has done, we therefore need to review our business and operational models as they will be impacted, if not disrupted. This presentation will also focus on how small/local AV deliveries might impact on larger logistics, and how additive manufacturing (3D printing) could change the nature of how and where things are made – thus impacting on how goods and materials transportation might change in the future.   AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES: DEVELOPMENT AND THE POTENTIAL IMPACT UPON REGULATION AND LICENSING How could the introduction of autonomous vehicles impact regulations and insurance coverage? Speaker: Rory Barnable, Barnable Law P.C. +/- This presentation will address the potential changes that autonomous vehicles will necessitate for current transportation liability regimes, principally focusing on automotive and marine transport.  We will discuss the legislative and insurance regimes various jurisdictions are implementing for autonomous vehicles, and drawing parallels from other methods of risk allocation, forecast potential changes that may accompany the increasing prevalence of this technology.   THE NEED FOR CYBER SECURITY IN THE TRANSPORT ECO-SYSTEM Impact of cyber attacks on modes of transportation covered by a Marine insurance policy Speaker: Clinton D’Souza, Manager, Canadian Operations, Starr Insurance +/- Lloyd’s Risk Index 2013 Global CXO survey cites cyber security risks as one of the top three priorities on boardroom agendas - failure to identify vulnerabilities and validate the effectiveness of security controls could compromise both the business and entire transport network. Peter L. Miller is president and chief executive officer of The Institutes and a member of The Institutes’ Senior Management Team. Before joining The Institutes in 1992, Miller worked as a computer consultant and as a project coordinator for Intracorp, a subsidiary of CIGNA Corporation. The platform aims to reduce global trade barriers and increase efficiency across international supply chains, connecting the entire supply chain ecosystem. It is being built on an open technology stack and is underpinned by blockchain technology.  The attributes of blockchain technology are ideally suited to large networks of disparate partners. A distributed ledger technology, blockchain establishes a shared, immutable record of all the transactions that take place within a network and then enables permissioned parties access to trusted data in real time. By applying the technology to digitize global trade processes, a new form of command and consent can be introduced into the flow of information, empowering multiple trading partners to collaborate and establishing a single shared view of a transaction without compromising details, privacy or confidentiality   Juan-Jose Ruiz is a global Strategy and Business Development executive with experience in technology, financial services, and media/information industries. He is currently leading IBM's Blockchain business development efforts across severalverticals with particular focus on Global Commerce. Mr. Kalman is renowned for his operational and business building expertise, and over his career has created billions in shareholder value.   Mr. Kalman is a General Partner at Eos Venture Partners, a Strategic InsurTech Venture Capital fund with offices in London and Philadelphia. IUMI Conference Award
Conference Award The CBMU IUMI Conference Award was created to encourage new or younger marine insurance professionals in Canada to attend the IUMI Conference and provide them with an opportunity to be introduced to the international marine insurance community.  Applications for the 2026 Award are open! The Award covers the IUMI Conference Registration as well as transportation and accommodations (for dates of the conference up to 4 nights) expenses up to $8,000 CAD. The 2026 IUMI Conference is taking place September 20 to September 23, 2026, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. More information at iumi2026.com Award Criteria: Anyone working in Marine Insurance in Canada for a member company of the CBMU, at least 3 years and not more than 15 years of experience.  The candidate participates upon one of the CBMU technical committees or will join on the year of the IUMI Conference. CBMU Board members are not eligible. The recipient is expected to attend all sessions of the IUMI conference and provide a 3 to 5 page written report summarizing what they have taken away from the conference within 30 days of the end of the IUMI conference to be posted upon our CBMU website. Participant has never been to an IUMI Conference previously (excluding Toronto) Selection made by the CBMU Board from the applications submitted. Preference will be given to candidates currently enrolled in the CIP program, especially to those who are majoring in the Marine concentration The Award recipient will be expected to provide the report detailed above and give a short presentation at the CBMU Fall Conference in Toronto. If for any reason any of the above criteria is not met at time of, or before the time of the Conference the Award could be passed to the second participant or not awarded for that year at the discretion of the CBMU Board. The CBMU Board will make this Award available annually at their discretion.   IUMI Conference Award Application Please submit applications to cbmu@cbmu.com by the deadline of May 8, 2026. If you have any questions please contact cbmu@cbmu.com Past Recipients & Reports 2025 - Richard Sanchez, Zurich Canada +/- About Richard: Richard Sanchez is a Senior Property and Marine Claims Specialist at Zurich Canada. He manages and supervises the handling of wide array of property and marine claims, especially large and complex losses. He also conducts group and individual trainings and mentoring on marine claims handling, customer service, and file documentation amongst colleagues at Zurich Canada and Zurich US.  His commitment to exemplary customer service has earned him the Zurich Annual Customer Rockstar Award for consecutive years. He has also received multiple recognitions, including the Zurich Impact Awards, for his outstanding management of claims and support for colleagues during periods of high claim volumes, such as overwhelming CAT events and General Average incidents. Demonstrating his passion for learning and continuous development, Richard was awarded the Zurich North America Learning Award. Most recently, he was honored with the prestigious 2025 National Leadership Award by the Insurance Institute of Canada and CIP Society. Outside of work, Richard is actively involved in the Canadian insurance industry. He has been an active member of CBMU’s Claims and Loss Prevention Committee since 2022. He is also one of the Ambassadors of the Insurance Institute of Canada under the Career Connection program, where he promotes the insurance industry to the public through career fairs, coffee chats and mentoring programs. He is a frequent speaker and panelist on insurance and diversity/inclusion discussions. Further, he is enthusiastic about volunteering and giving back to the community such as mentoring youth/kids from low income or underprivileged families under the United Way Network Program, fundraising and supporting youth mental health under JackRide, among others. 2024 - Chris Parisi, Northbridge General Insurance Corporation +/- About Chris: Chris currently works at Northbridge Insurance as a Senior Marine Underwriter.  Chris started his insurance career in 2016 selling and servicing personal lines insurance at Belairdirect.  After a year at Belairdirect, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in underwriting.  Chris spent the next three years as a Personal Lines Underwriter, and then two years as a Commercial Lines Underwriter at Wawanesa Insurance.  It was 2021 when Chris made the jump to marine insurance by joining Burns & Wilcox Canada and then Northbridge Insurance in 2023.  Chris is a member of the CBMU Underwriting Committee and is a frequent volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers Christmas Volunteer Day. 2023 - Michael Dearness, Burns & Wilcox +/- About Michael: Michael joined Burns & Wilcox Canada in January of 2022 as the Freight Services leader. He started in Marine insurance when he joined the Aon Toronto Marine department in May 2014. Prior to joining Burns & Wilcox, Mike spent some time with the Marsh Marine department, rising to the position of North American Shippers’ Interest Leader.   Michael took on the role of Underwriting Committee Chair in March of 2023 and is looking forward to representing Canada and the CBMU at the 2023 IUMI conference in Edinburgh.  2022 - Samy Bechikhi, Intact Insurance 2019 - Jahanzeb Durrani, Kaufman Financial Group - Burns & Wilcox +/- About Jahanzeb: Jahanzeb began his career in Marine insurance in 2015 with the purchase of AVEC by Kaufman Financial Group as an assistant underwriter. In his current role, Ocean Marine Underwriter for the Marine Center of Excellence of North America, some of the risks that come through his desk are: Cargo, Hull, Liability, Yachts and Freight Forwarder. He also works very closely with all offices in North America to underwrite and place complex risks as a team. He is currently a member of CBMU (Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters) and is looking forward to joining the CBMU Educational Committee. He is diligently working towards completing his CIP Designation with a focus on Marine. Jahanzeb is an alumnus of Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College. 2018 - Danielle Jackson, Intact Insurance +/- About Danielle: Danielle graduated from Fanshawe College with an Advanced Marketing Diploma in 2008. That summer Danielle began her career in Marine Insurance as both a Yacht Underwriter and Broker with Pacific Marine Underwriters. After her time at PMU Danielle continued brokering in the Marine Department at Aon before moving to the underwriting side at Coast Underwriters in 2012. During her time with Coast Danielle joined the CBMU as a member of the Communications Committee and then gladly accepted the role of Communications Committee Chair in 2014. In 2017 Danielle moved to Intact as a Commercial Marine Underwriter, completed her CIP designation with a focus on Marine and took over the role of Education Committee Chair for the CBMU. Danielle is now in the midst of completing her CRM designation and is working on setting up numerous new benefits of being a CBMU member such as CIP study groups, lunch and learns and more. Danielle was honoured to represent Canada and promote the 2019 IUMI conference being held in Toronto while at the 2018 Conference in Cape Town. 2017 - Mark McNeil, Coast Underwriters +/- About Mark: Mark was appointed Director of Atlantic Operations, for Coast Underwriters Ltd. in December 2011. Prior to joining Coast Underwriters, he worked for RSA in their National Training Program. Mark has worked at Coast Underwriters’ Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax offices as a Commercial Underwriter and Underwriting Manager. He is a current member of the CBMU Underwriting Committee and past member of the MIABC Underwriting Committee. 2016 - Jennifer Bensley, Intact Insurance +/- About Jennifer: Jennifer began her career in marine insurance in the summer of 2011 as a Marine Summer Student with Axa Pacific. After a rewarding summer, she went back to the University of Victoria to complete the final year of her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a Minor in European Studies. Upon completion of her degree in June 2012, she returned to the Intact Marine team as an Underwriting Assistant for both the Yachts and Commercial Marine teams. CBMU 100th Anniversary Archive  President's Message expand view +/- This year, The Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters is celebrating its 100th anniversary. What an exciting time for our association! From its humble beginning in 1917 to what it has become today, the CBMU has continuously been the leading voice of the Marine insurance industry in Canada. The evolution of shipping over the past 100 years has been staggering. From ship’s primary energy source going from coal to oil, from steam engines to Diesel ones, from the introduction of new navigable routes to the completion of the St-Lawrence Seaway, and not to mention containerization, the innovation that revolutionized and expanded the pathways of global trade – all of these historical events (and many more) have shaped the Marine insurance industry to what is has become today. The CBMU has brilliantly navigated through 100 years of history. No shipments will be accepted in Stronco advance warehouse on or after September 10, 2019. After September 10, 2019, shipments should be arranged for delivery directly to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Hotel Shipping Label (doc) All packages/shipments will be accepted by the Royal York Xerox Business Centre. The exhibitors are responsible for bringing their packages to the conference space.
