Opening Remarks and President's Report

A welcome to the Fall Conference and review of the past year in the Canadian marine insurance industry.

Danielle Jackson, CBMU President, Falvey Insurance Group

Danielle graduated from Fanshawe College with an Advanced Marketing Diploma in 2008. That summer Danielle began her career in Marine Insurance as both a Yacht Underwriter and Broker with Pacific Marine Underwriters. After her time at PMU Danielle continued brokering in the Marine Department at Aon before moving to the underwriting side at Coast Underwriters in 2012. During her time with Coast Danielle joined the CBMU as a member of the Communications Committee and then gladly accepted the role of Communications Committee Chair in 2014. In 2017 Danielle moved to Intact as a Commercial Marine Underwriter, completed her CIP designation with a focus on Marine and took over the role of Education Committee Chair for the CBMU. Danielle moved to Falvey Insurance Group as a Vice President in 2021 and served as CBMU Vice-President from 2022 before now taking the role of President.

BRAVA: Bridge Risk Assessment for Vessel Allision

The collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge highlighted the increasing exposure posed by vessel allisions and aging infrastructure. This presentation introduces BRAVA (Bridge Risk Assessment for Vessel Allision), Munich Re's analytical framework for assessing bridge vulnerability to vessel impacts. Drawing on bridge, vessel traffic, and incident data, BRAVA evaluates the adequacy of bridge protection systems relative to modern maritime exposures. The session will explore key findings, emerging trends, and the implications for marine insurers, reinsurers, infrastructure owners, and risk managers. Although primarily based on U.S. data, some recent Canadian incidents are also included. The insights are broadly applicable to Canadian waterways and critical infrastructure, offering valuable perspectives for understanding and managing this evolving risk.

James Puglia, Senior Vice President, Munich Re

James Puglia is a Senior Vice President with Munich Re based in New York City. James is part of Munich Re's North America Marine Team where he underwrites Ocean and Inland Marine treaty business and facultative reinsurance across a broad range of marine classes including Cargo, Hull, P&I, Marine Liabilities, and Yacht. During his career with Munich Re, James has held roles spanning underwriting, client and broker management, and client analytics. He is actively involved in the marine insurance community, having served in leadership roles as a Past President of the American Marine Insurance Forum (AMIF), as a Junior Technical Committee Member of IUMI’s Facts & Figures, and currently serves as a member of AIMU’s Facts & Figures Committee and on AIMU Board of Directors. James is a 2012 graduate of The College of New Jersey, and a former Treasurer and Member of the Board of Trustees of the West Windsor Arts Council.
