Presenter Bios:
Jerry Giroux, Senior Vice President, Gallagher
Mr. Giroux holds the designation of Chartered Insurance Professional of the Insurance Institute of Canada.
He is a Registered Insurance Broker in the province of Ontario. Mr. Giroux began his career in the insurance industry in 1979. While responsible for claims, he quickly learned the technical skills within many business insurance specialties. His career path lead him to London and allowed him to work and study with Norwich Union Insurance. He was ultimately appointed President for Canada. He has gone on to attaining extensive experience as an insurance company executive and ultimately a “serial entrepreneur,” forming and selling a number of insurance businesses along the way.
Mr. Giroux is past president of the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters and has authored and edited various industry textbooks and publications. He has represented Canada as a delegate at three IUMI conferences and is a former director of the Canadian Freight Forwarding Association.
He is a noted speaker and author, having authored and edited; “Marine Insurance - The Silent Export” (Published 1994/1999/2014), Co- authored CIFFA textbook. He is an approved RIBO and IIC lecturer.
He currently serves as Chairman of International Trade Committee Canadian Association of Railway Suppliers and sits on the IRC Board at Galileo Global Equity Advisors.
With more than 30 years in the insurance business he brings considerable experience and a vast network of contacts.
Rui Fernandes, Partner, Fernandes Hearn LLP, CIFFA legal counsel
Mr. Fernandes practices in all aspects of transportation law (aviation, marine, trucking, rail, freight forwarding, logistics and warehousing). He advises clients on international trade, import and export, and cross border issues in the transportation field.
Mr. Fernandes has been included in the Lexpert®/American Lawyer Guide as one of the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada. He’s on the list in "Best Lawyers in Canada" in the area of maritime law and transportation law. He is Chambers Canada ranked, Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent rated, and a Who’s Who Legal Canada Thought Leader in Shipping and Maritime Law. Mr. Fernandes has appeared before the courts of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
He conducts numerous mediations and arbitrations for clients and also acts as a mediator and arbitrator for other parties. He holds mediation certificates from the University of Windsor for its ADR Workshop and for its Advanced ADR Workshop and Pepperdine University for its STAR program (Systematic Approach to Mediation Strategies). He is a qualified arbitrator and holds Q. Arb. and FCIArb designations.
He is the author of numerous articles and seven texts on transportation and insurance law, including the three-volume “Transportation Law” published by Aerospark Press. Lexis Nexis has published three volumes by Mr. Fernandes, on Railway Law, Carriage of Goods and Maritime Law, in their Halsbury’s Laws of Canada.
David St. Martin, Vice President – Marine and Logistics Practise Leader, Strategic Underwriting Managers Inc., a division of One80 Intermediaries
David is Marine and Logistics Practice Leader, SUM Insurance.
David has worked in the marine and logistics insurance sector for twenty years. Starting in the claims and recovery department of an international marine insurance company, David progressed to underwriting and marketing positions before operating a branch office. David has also worked the brokerage side and was a partner in a Canadian Marine Managing General Agency. David is a Certified Insurance Professional and is RIBO licensed.
Kevan Tattam, President, International Bond and Marine (now part of OneBeacon Insurance Group and Intact Insurance company)
President and founder of International Bond & Marine in 1986. 40 plus years trade related surety experience. International Bond is a pioneer and leading system integrator with United States Customs & Border Protection. IB&M was one of the first to successfully adopt CBP’s Automated Surety Interface system. IB&M is a leading provider of US customs bonds, with an underwriting capacity in excess of $ 500 million. IB&M was recently acquired by INTACT , Canada’s largest car, home and business insurer. Kevin serves on the board of the International Trade Surety Association, and is a member of many other industry organizations.
